Vehicle History

The Story\nBehind the Car

The Ferrari Dino 246 GT arrived from a private collector in Vienna in the autumn of 2022. Chassis number 04326, one of only 2,295 coupes produced between 1969 and 1974, it had been off the road for eleven years following a previous cosmetic restoration of questionable quality.

On arrival, the paintwork presented extensive orange peel, several repaired panels with mismatched colour, and heavy swirl marks consistent with incorrect machine polishing. Beneath the paint, three separate spray applications had been applied over the original factory Rosso Corsa — none of them stripped.

The owner's requirement was unambiguous: a return to the single-stage depth of a period-correct factory finish, eligible for concours judging. Every panel was stripped to bare metal, measured, straightened where necessary, and rebuilt from the primer stage upward across the course of fourteen weeks.

Workshop Notes

The Outcome

The completed car departed the workshop in March 2023, measured at a paint depth of 95–105 microns across all panels — consistent with a single, correctly applied factory application. Gloss meter readings averaged 97.4 GU at 60°, placing the finish within the upper range of what is achievable on original steel bodywork.

The vehicle was subsequently shown at the Coupé d'Élégance Classic in Vienna and awarded Best Prepared in the pre-1975 class. The owner reported no judge deductions on paintwork.
